Pressure on the joints, pressure on the workplace...

Did you know that Great Britain has the highest figure for the number of people born during the 1980's and 1990's who who are obese and face an even bigger increased risk of  getting cancer in their 40s and 50s?

 

Why is that?  Is it because most 21st century jobs involve sitting at desk for up to 12 hours a day? Or is it easier to get a bus or car to work rather than walk? Or is it our diet? Or is it a combination of all three?

 

There are people who battling daily to get healthier, lose weight, get active whilst holding down a job, pay the rent/ mortgage, get the children to school AND get to the supermarket. They have to contend with lower back pain, neck problems and poor posture due to sitting all day at a desk, getting young children in and out of the car to school..the list is endless.

 

No wonder most people just flop down in the evenings mentally and physically shattered.

 

Now the Lancet (BBC 21 March 2018) has announced that most measures recommended by the medical profession to deal with back pain - injections, surgery and strong drugs are an 'overkill' and that most treatments are 'ineffective and potentially harmful'

 

The article begins by saying that lower back pain is the leading cause of disability globally and that patients are let down by the treatments recommended by doctors. The medical profession recommend physical activity  as the main remedy, mmm, pretty hard  when you have been sitting at a desk all day and can't go out in evenings because the mortgage./rent has to be paid or you can't get a babysitter to get to a Pilates session.

 

I am an advanced level Pilates Instructor and have learnt all about the pressure on the joints in the overweight person and how it affects the posture and spine alignment. I am now a qualified Nutritional and Weight Management Adviser and now understand how challenging it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat well when work and family commitments must take priority. How tempting just to get a takeaway or ready meal which are high in saturated fats, a short cut to a heat attack or stroke.

 

No wonder the average Briton doesn't know where to turn when the medical profession advocates more exercise to combat the growing epidemic in back pain and yet  they don't have the time or money to buy fresh fruit and vegetables or cook healthy meals from scratch.

 

UK Businesses and Employers must support their staff  to achieve their health goals by offering opportunities for their staff to exercise at work and not just the odd walk around the office either.  Many premises have spare rooms that could be used for Pilates sessions to help with lower back pain, poor posture and digestive problems. 

 

We still have caveman bodies and we not meant to sit still for 8 or 9 hours a day and we not meant to exist on ready made meals.

 

In 2012 the Government of the day agreed for GPs to refer patients with heart conditions, and obese or with arthritic conditions or suffering depression for free exercise sessions at local gyms. These have turned to be incredibly popular and successful however, most people who are able to attend these sessions are retired and have the time.

 

Something is very wrong when the hardworking population of the UK suffering with excruciating back pain from sitting all day,  who are overweight, stressed and depressed working a 12 hour day and looking after a family,  who don't have the time, energy, inclination or money to exercise.

 

Something must be done soon before workplaces are ghost towns and hospitals are full.
